Gingival / Gum Grafting

Recession, which is an abnormal shift in the location of the gum, may or may not require treatment. It does require treatment when none of the existing true gum tissue (gingiva) remains attached to the tooth. The result of this lack of attachment will cause the rate of recession to accelerate rapidly, which is likely to create a major aesthetic compromise or possible tooth loss.

Gum grafting is the corrective procedure that restores the gum to its natural, healthy state. Using gum tissue obtained from the roof of the mouth, the receded gums are grafted. When utilizing the palate as a source of the graft Dr. Train uses a more advanced technique resulting in a very tiny palatal wound which will heal extremely fast. This is a major step forward over older techniques which took the surface tissue exclusively creating a broad slow healing wound.

Other techniques allow us to use "membranes" processed from animal sources eliminating the need for any palatal involvement.

The goal of the graft is to cover exposed tooth and root surfaces with grafted on oral tissue.  This grafting encourages new tissue growth that will enable the gums to return to a more normal position around the teeth. The procedure is routine and entails a minimal amount of downtime and discomfort.
